At Monday’s Bullock County Commission meeting, Attorney Myron Penn announced that he and his wife, Karen, recently removed Confederate flags from behind the Red Door Theater.
In his presentation, Penn stated that the flags were “symbols of a divided society, and I do not want the children of our community—black, white, Hispanic, or whatever--to ever feel they are a part of a community that is divided.”
Penn, who served two terms in the Alabama Senate after serving as Bullock County’s first black elected commission chairman, said that his four-year old son deserved to grow up in a community that is not tainted by painful relics of the past “that only symbolize a division within our nation, our community, and our people.”
Penn went on to say, “We are charged with the responsibility of providing the best for all of our children, and Karen and I refuse to allow our community to fall victim to symbols that serve no purpose other than to divide us.”
Karen stated that while the flag display was historic, it also brought with it a darkness that only causes more pain to those who view it as a reminder of a past that no one should want to re-live. She stated, “I told Myron that it baffles me that these flags were flown in the most visible and identifiable location in Bullock County, and we have accepted them as a part of our past. Well, our past and our present seem to have combined to a point where we accept them as a way of life, and I think it’s wrong for us to do so. This is year 2015, which is 150 years since the end of the Civil War, and to celebrate symbols of anyone’s oppression should not be what our community wants.”
Attorney Penn said the flags were removed in broad daylight during Mother’s Day weekend and were delivered to City Hall of Union Springs. They are available to the owner for pickup.

Teaching his child to hate and rob graves on Mothers Day, what a guy.
"I do not want the children of our community—black, white, Hispanic, or whatever--to ever feel they are a part of a community that is divided.”
I wonder if those same feelings apply to Black History Month, Christmas, or St Patrick's Day ?
A thief is a thief, he should be prosecuted ! ( Alabama Code Section 13A-7-23.1:)
Needs to have his law license pulled as this is a class A misdemeanor and he, above all others, should know that!
ReplyDeleteI think his actions put him in the same boat as pedophiles and wife beaters.
DeleteWhat a low life stealing from the dead.
What disgusts me more then his actions, because let's face it, some people feel entitled to do whatever their emotions dictate them to do, but the fact that he is not being prosecuted as a criminal. At the very least, his license to practice law should be suspended if not revoked.
